Attractions listed represent Fremont County attractions that are regularly open to visitors. Owners and operators may submit commercial ventures, or individuals may submit their favorite attractions. One-time events should be listed on the Events page.

Aiken Canyon

The nature Conservancy and Aiken Canyon, located 15 miles NE of Penrose along Hwy. 115, is one of the largest known, high quality foothills ecosystem along Colorado's Front Range. Historically and ecologically rich, Aiken Canyon is a valuable part of Colorado's natural heritage. Named after Charles Aiken, an ornithologist who first surveyed this site in the 1870's. Aiken Canyon includes diverse geologic formations, plant communities and provides habitat for a large number of animal species. This mixture of geology, ecology and history is unique to this area. The 1,621 acre preserve contain two globally rare plant communities: the pinon pine-one-seeded juniper/Scribner needle grass woodland and the Gamble oak-mountain mahogany shrubland. More than 120 species of birds have been documented at the preserve.

Arkansas River

The Arkansas Headwater is one of the nation's premier recreation areas. Stretching for 148 miles along the Arkansas River, the area offers abundant and outstanding opportunities for fish, white water rafting, kayaking, picnicking, hiking, camping, mountain biking and sightseeing among deep canyons, broad valleys and towering mountain peaks. The cities and towns along the river -- Leadville, Buena Vista, Poncha Springs, Salida, Canon City, Florence, Penrose and Pueblo -- offer fine dining, lodging and plenty of western hospitality.

Brush Hollow Reservoir and State Wildlife Area

Brush Hollow is located two miles west of Penrose on County Rd 123, then two miles north. There you will find fishing, wildlife observation and picnic areas.

Indian Springs Ranch Campground

Secluded in pinon pine, cedar trees and scrub oak, you will find superb camping, hiking, horseback riding (by appointment) and a swimming pool. Indian Springs Campground can accommodate 30 full hook-ups for RV's and 100 tent sites. Clean restroom and shower facilities are available. They are located north of Hwy. 50 by following Phantom Canyon Road (County RD 76) for 3 miles where you see the campground sign. Call (719) 372-3907 for more information.

Lake Pueblo State Park

The Park offers swimming, boating, water skiing, biking, campground and both warm and cold water fishing. Camp sites include fireplaces, tables, shade covers and restrooms. Lake Pueblo State Park is located 25 miles east of Penrose off of Hwy 50.

Royal Gorge Bridge

Cross the world's highest suspension bridge! Since its completion in 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge has thrilled millions of visitors. Whether you walk, drive or ride the trolley across the nearly quarter-mile span, you'll marvel at the dazzling view of the blue-green Arkansas River over a thousand feet below. The bridge is located nineteen miles west of Penrose off U.S. Highway 50. Fun for the entire family.
